CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. (WSIL) — Veterans who live in the area will soon be able to get additional care closer to home.

Construction on a new VA health clinic is set to begin this spring and will be located at 711 S. Mt. Auburn Road, on Interstate 55.

The health clinic is an extension of the John J. Pershing V-A medical Center in Poplar Bluff and received congressional approval in 2014.

The 43,000 square foot building will offer several new services to veterans in Cape Girardeau as care at the current Community Base Outpatient Clinic is limited.

Those include eight primary care teams, lab and radiology, eye and audiology clinics, pharmacy and several specialty care services and procedures.

Right now, patients have to drive an hour away to Poplar Bluff or Marion, Illinois for some of those care options.

Libby Johnson, Associate Medical Center Director, says the goal is to enroll 3,000 new veteran health patients for the health center.

“One of the myths that I hear a lot is that they want to save the services for a veteran that they feel needs it more. But the opposite is true,” Libby explains. “The more people enrolled the more services we can bring to this area.”

Even veterans who live in close by southern Illinois towns such as East Cape Girardeau and McClure, can use the VA health clinic once it opens.

The goal is to open its door by 2022.
