ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) — It was a big day in downtown Rochester and a big day for Destination Medical Center (DMC). One Discovery Square is now open for business, making it the highlight of all the things DMC has done so far.
In a line of new things coming to downtown Rochester, this is the newest: One Discovery Square.
“I can’t tell you how excited I am to see what we have in front of us right now,” said Lisa Clarke, DMC EDA Executive Director.
Under construction since November 2017, this Grand Opening marks one of the biggest moments to date for DMC. The group centered on a 20-year plan to transform Rochester into a global destination for health and wellness.
“It is the start, it is the start of innovation and hub in downtown Rochester, but it’s not just for the people in those buildings. It’s for this entire community and you will start to see this transform everyday, right in front of your eyes,” continued Clarke.
Also part of the Discovery Square is the Discovery Walk, which is the beginning of their efforts to connect downtown to Soldiers Field.
“This will no longer be just a street, this will be an experience that will connect you to the community, to the businesses and to this whole area of town, in ways we’ve never been able to experience before,” said Rochester Mayor and DMC Board of Directors Vice Chair, Kim Norton.
Highlighting part of the 90,000 square foot healthcare innovation campus is Shawn McCann’s 3D artwork, which is a representation of what the Discovery Walk will look like in the future.
“I love Rochester, there’s so many great things going on here and it’s exciting to bring street art to the area, so hopefully we can bring more of it,” said McCann.
Art, interactive science displays, and businesses lined the Discovery Walk, putting the full Discovery Square District on display.
“You will see a more walkable, livable, community space in an area that has not had that for years, maybe ever,” continued Norton.
Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota-Rochester, Epic, Boston Scientific and several others are already set up as tenants at One Discovery Square.
Thursday’s event went from 4-6 p.m., people in attendance were also able to take a self-guided tour of the place, while participating in a scavenger hunt.
